Typically speaking, an IP rating looks like the above graphic. The IP stands for “Ingress Protection” and this remains as the constant throughout the ratings. It’s the numbers that show the differentiation. Below is a detailed explanation of what each digit refers to when it comes to choosing the correct IP rating for your needs.
(1) First Digit (Protection against solids):
This digit ranges from 0 to 6 and indicates the level of protection against solid objects like dust and debris.
0: No protection against contact and ingress of objects.
1: Protection against objects larger than 50 mm, such as a hand.
2: Protection against objects larger than 12.5 mm, such as a finger.
3: Protection against objects larger than 2.5 mm, such as tools or thick wires.
4: Protection against objects larger than 1 mm, such as most wires and screws.
5: Dust-protected (limited ingress of dust allowed, but not enough to harm the device).
6: Dust-tight (no ingress of dust).
(2) Second Digit (Protection against liquids):
This digit ranges from 0 to 9 and indicates the level of protection against liquids, such as water.
0: No protection.
1: Protection against vertically falling drops of water (condensation).
2: Protection against vertically falling drops of water when tilted up to 15°.
3: Protection against water falling as a spray at any angle up to 60° from the vertical.
4: Protection against water splashing from any direction.
5: Protection against water jets projected by a nozzle (6.3mm) from any direction.
6: Protection against powerful water jets (12.5mm) from any direction.
7: Protection against immersion in water up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes.
8: Protection against continuous immersion in water beyond 1 meter (specific conditions are provided by the manufacturer).
9: Protection against high-pressure, high-temperature water jets.
